Cyanobacteria and toxins contained in their cells negatively affect the quality of water and the possibilities of using reservoirs. They cause unpleasant allergic reactions or eczema to humans, affect fish stocks and other aquatic organisms, and threaten domestic and farm animals. A higher content of cyanobacteria in reservoirs used as a source of drinking water causes problems at water treatment plants. The water often has unfavorable organoleptic properties, smells bad or has a hard-to-remove aftertaste.
