The EU Researcher magazine published an article about the European research project LIFE4ZOO, in which Photon Water as a technology partner is developing a circular water management solution for zoos. A pilot project is underway at the Liberec Zoo and the next one will be the Barcelona Zoo in Spain.
The LIFE4ZOO project aims to develop a modern water management system for zoos called Fit4Use, focusing on sustainability and efficient use of water resources. The project brings together several partners: the Technical University of Liberec, the Universities of Girona and Barcelona, Zoo Liberec, Zoo Barcelona and Photon Water as technology partner.
At Photon Water, we believe that the Fit4Use system could be applied to other visitor attractions, farms and industrial parks to increase water efficiency and reduce the negative impact on the environment. It will allow them to reuse water and avoid the consumption of valuable drinking water, reducing overall operating costs. The project aims to reduce water wastage, improve water quality and ensure a reliable supply of water for animal husbandry.
This includes the design of a solution for powering the entire recirculating system with solar panels that will be installed directly on the premises of the Liberec Zoo and are sized to precisely cover the energy needs of the recirculating system. The project is now entering the final implementation and installation phase. Dr. Petr Kvapil, on behalf of Photon Water, spoke about the project for EU Researcher magazine.
"Different animals produce different types of contaminated water with different concentrations of pollutants. Testing the system will provide very valuable information for designing the sizing of a future system in any animal facility, zoo, farm, botanical park, urban area or industrial site," explains Dr. Petr Kvapil from Photon Water.
